A 26-year-old man was arrested and charged Wednesday night for a hit-and-run collision that killed an elderly couple on Staten Island.
Police say Allmir Lekperic was traveling westbound on New Dorp Lane around 7 p.m. when he struck 78-year-old Peter Sabados and his 77-year-old wife, Lillian as they were crossing the street on their way to church.
The two died at Staten Island University Hospital.
Their pastor at Our Lady Queen of Peace says they were on their way to church, trying to give what they could to help the less fortunate during the holiday.
"They are truly practicing Catholics, otherwise they wouldn't take time to come in the evening time, in that weather to come and celebrate mass with us. At the time of the accident they had actually the food they were bringing to the church to give to the poor," said Father Pancrose Kalist.
"It's the people they were. They were honest caring people, very religious, very low key," said the victims' son.
Lekperic is being charged with leaving the scene of the accident and driving with a suspended license.
