A Queens man who police say admitted to murdering his wife and son last week is blaming their death on his alter ego -- a claim his sister-in-law says holds no weight.

Otto Herrarte, 48, is charged with second degree murder, weapons possession and evidence tampering.

Investigators say he slit the throats of his wife, Edna, and their son, Daniel, and stuffed them in a closet on Friday.

Officials say on Saturday, Herrarte blamed the crime on his alter ego Roberto.

"She called the police, he was in the background Otto, who referred to himself as Robert. Otto was the good person, Robert was the perpetrator in this case," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

The sister of the victim said this is the first she's ever heard of her brother-in-law's split personality.

"He was always the same. We spent holidays many times together and he was always the same," said the son of the victim's sister, Aaron Villela.

Herrarte's 15-year-old son, who was not hurt, is staying with relatives.

"Considering the situation he is doing okay, but it's unbearable and it's painful and he is dependent on his family at this point and we are there for him," Villela said.

Senator Hiram Monseratte and Assemblyman Jose Peralta have set up an education fund to help the teen. Monserrate is also trying to secure visas for the victims' family in Guatemala.

"We have reached out to both our U.S. Senators' offices here in the state of New York and the General Council of Guatemala," Monserrate said. "We are assisting in the issuing of passports to the family members and requesting emergency visas for the family members in Guatemala now who want to come here to be with the family in this time of mourning."

Herrarte has been ordered to have a psychiatric evaluation before his court date next month.
