The American Cancer Society is holding its 34th Great American Smokeout today, to encourage smokers to either make a plan to quit or give up the habit entirely.
The cancer society says about 443,000 early deaths a year can be attributed to tobacco, including almost 7,500 in the city, where the smoking rate is among the nation's lowest at 16 percent.
Smoking also accounts for $193 billion in health care costs and productivity losses.
Smokers who want help quitting can call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 or the New York State Smokers' Quitline at 1-866-NY-QUITS.
