He may have been a one-time rival in the mayoral race, but Congressman Anthony Weiner is defending Mayor Michael Bloomberg, after a colleague suggested the mayor's family could be in danger because of the upcoming September 11th terror trial.
On Monday, Arizona Republican John Shadegg blasted Bloomberg for saying the city can handle terror trials.
Shadegg previously brought a baby onto the House floor during the health care debate.
The congressman said everyone from the judge's wife to the mayor's daughter would be at risk as a result.
"Well, mayor, how are you going to feel when it's your daughter who is kidnapped at school by a terrorist?" asked Shadegg.
Congressman Weiner was so outraged by the remarks that he had came to the mayor's defense on the House floor late yesterday.
“It is one thing to bring a baby to the floor of Congress and use it as a prop in the health care debate and quite another to suggest that a family of the mayor of the City of New York might be in danger because they have a different political view about how to carry out justice,” Weiner said.
Shadegg later apologized – saying he was sorry for the insensitivity of his remarks.
A spokesman for Bloomberg says they're not dignifying the remarks with a response.
