Some Staten Island residents woke up to a mess this morning after a massive water main break flooded their streets.
The 20-inch, 50-year-old main broke at Victory Boulevard and Leroy Street in Travis around 4 a.m.
The break left a giant crater on the street and caused flooding in eight basements, some with up to eight feet of water. The Fire Department aided residents pumping out the water.
"We have one home that was flooded pretty bad, about six or eight feet of water in the basement,” said FDNY Battalion Chief Joe Harris. “Right now, at present, we are pumping it out."
"I just saw the water now,” said Steven Baudille, the resident with the eight feet of water in his basement. “I'm a little taken in by it to be honest; I don't know what to do with it."
Ten homes were without water for about an hour, but service was restored quickly thanks to a smaller main that also runs up and down the street.
West Shore Inn restaurant owner Lisa Marando said she is grateful her property was not damaged.
"I received a phone call about 6:30 this morning, so we ran over here, praying everything was going to be nice and dry, and it was,” she said.
The Department of Environmental Protection said the portion of Victory Boulevard would likely remain closed until Thursday.
"We have to bring in a new section of main to replace it and the full restoration of the street, because you can see the extent of damage to the pavement, will take some time,” said DEP Commissioner Steven Lawitts.
Along with the road closures came traffic troubles. Vehicles, including buses, will be detoured off of Victory Boulevard until the repairs are completed.
