Police arrested a man Sunday for allegedly setting a Queens apartment on fire.
Fire officials say Kehman Clark, 25, set fire to the doorway of an apartment on the fifth floor of a building in the Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City.
Officials say after firefighters put out the flames and forced the door open, they found two children, ages four and five, trapped inside back bedrooms.
“There was fire in the doorway and we heard the kids screaming in the back of the apartment,” said Firefighter Dave Loesar. “And then [fellow firefighter] Leo [Lopez] found the first one.”
“And then [Loesar] found the second one in the rear bedroom,” Lopez added. “And we got them out.”
Neighbors say Clark also set fire to his girlfriend who lived in the apartment.
They say she came running outside in flames, screaming for help.
"All I know is he just came to the door and threw the lighter fluid on her because she kicked him out of the house, the kids were still in the apartment and it was really sad it really was," said one neighbor.
"It's just a tragedy It was unexpected, mind blowing, the young lady. She's gentle, warm and kind, and she's a beautiful person," said another neighbor.
Officials say the woman was badly burned. She along with five others were taken to the hospital.
They are all are expected to survive.
