State legislators will be back in Albany on Monday as part of an ongoing special session called by Governor David Paterson to tackle several issues including the state's growing budget deficit.

Lawmakers are expected to continue debating a plan to bridge a $3 billion plus deficit.

At issue is a midyear cut to school aid, which would most likely result in higher local property taxes from school districts this spring.

Meanwhile, Paterson on Sunday announced he will reconsider forcing New York drivers to buy new license plates. That's if state lawmakers work to find alternatives to replace the revenue that would be lost from the controversial proposal which is included in the governor's budget deficit reduction plan.

Otherwise, drivers will have to pay up for the new plates starting next year. They are slated to cost $25 when renewing a registration and an extra $20 to keep the same plate number.

The state expects to bring in $129 million over two years with the new regulations.

In response to the governor's offer, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver says his conference will work to repeal the license plate requirement.

Budget issues aside, the senate is also expected to discuss a heavily debated bill that would legalize same sex marriage.

Supporters of the legislation remain confident it will come to a vote by the end of the year.
