Harmless White Powder Forces Evacuation On Ellis Island
Ellis Island was briefly evacuated Saturday after a visitor found white powder on an audio headset, according to National Parks officials.
Parks officials say the former immigration station was evacuated and a Fire Department Hazardous Materials unit that responded determined that the powder was not harmful.
Witnesses told NY1 they waited more than an hour to be taken off of the island and brought back to Lower Manhattan.
The tourist site was again open to visitors shortly after 4 p.m.
