After years of construction and community debate, big-box retailer Costco officially opened its doors Thursday in East Harlem.

The superstore is part of East River Plaza, a new mall along the FDR Drive at 117th Street.

Members of Community Board 11 said residents were concerned over what the stores will do to the neighborhood in terms of construction and traffic.

Those who came out for the store's opening mostly had good things to say about their new neighbor.

"Anytime there's change people get afraid, but we have a lot of change going in our world, so I think this is going to be a positive thing, I think, for our community," said one East Harlem resident.

"Well it's great for me because I'm handicapped and it's right in my neighborhood so I don't have to travel as much to get to the store," said another East Harlem resident.

Customers also told NY1 they liked the prices and service offered.

Retailers Target, Best Buy and Marshalls are also expected to open locations in the plaza early next year.
