In less than 10 days, pedicabs have to be licensed -- and the Department of Consumer Affairs is urging operators to apply.

So far, only 32 businesses and 145 drivers have applied, but industry estimates say thousands of pedicabs are on the road.

Unlicensed pedicab businesses and drivers cannot legally operate after November 20th.

The Consumer Affairs Commissioner is urging people not to ride in a pedicab that doesn't have a registration sticker after that date.

"These licenses are really important, not because we're looking for license fees, but because this is how we can check to make sure that the pedicab business is fully insured, and we can inspect from top to bottom their pedicab vehicle to make sure that it's safe. That means seatbelts, brakes, lights, the works," said Consumer Affairs Commissioner Jonathan Mintz.

After November 20th, it will be at least 18 months before any pedicab operator can apply again for a license.
