Former New York City police commissioner Bernard Kerik pleaded guilty Thursday morning to making false statements to White House officials and tax fraud.

A White Plains judge accepted the plea bargain, which will send Kerik to prison for 27 to 33 months.

Any time a former commissioner of police in New York has to plead guilty to eight federal felonies it is a sad day," said U.S. Attorney Preet Bhara.

Kerik was accused of accepting renovations to his co-op from a contractor looking to do business with the city. He faced three separate federal trials, including one that was set to get underway Monday.

He admitted to lying during the White House vetting process when he was nominated for Homeland Security Department secretary in 2004.

Prosecutors alleged that in exchange for renovations to his apartment, Kerik tried to get that company a city contract.

He denied having any financial ties to companies doing business with the city.

Kerik has been behind bars at the Westchester County Jail since a judge revoked his bail, after the judge said information in the case was leaked.

Bail could now be reinstated, as Kerik is no longer facing trial.

Kerik will be sentenced on February 18.
