A child died Monday after two minivans crashed in Queens.

Police say a van with at least six children inside crossed the median and crashed into another van at the intersection of Dunkirk Street and Brikerhoff Avenue in St. Albans just before 5 p.m.

Five children were taken to the hospital, but as of late Monday their conditions were unknown.

One witness said it appears one of the drivers was speeding.

"The Mazda truck was coming on to Dunkirk like 55, 60 [mph], fast. The Honda truck was turning onto Arcade, and the car did not stop. So they hit each other and the car flew onto the sidewalk over there," said witness Charnele Melvin. "And when I came out, on the phone with the cops, the driver hopped out of the car and was stumbling around, looking for her stuff."

Investigators say the driver who had children in the van was in police custody late Monday.

As of 1 a.m. Tuesday, no charges had been filed.
