Churchgoers in Williamsbridge, Bronx took time during an emotional Sunday Mass to honor a 92-year-old parishioner who was accidentally shot and killed last week.

Sadie Mitchell was watching television in her home Tuesday when she was fatally hit by a bullet allegedly fired by Jamal Blair, 18.

Worshippers at Our Lady of Grace Church told NY1 that Mitchell regular attended services there for four decades, and that she also taught religious classes at the church's school.

Those who attended the service said they wanted to keep Mitchell's memory alive.

"Very simple, under the radar, but gentle and full of faith, and that's what inspired all of us," said Father Levelt Jermaine of Our Lady of Grace. "That's why she was so beloved here."

"She was a very independent person, you know," said friend Myrtle Butler. "She loved life, she was an activist [in the] AARP, community block organizer. Just loved people, she was definitely a people person."

"Beautiful woman with heart. The way she talked, 'Oh, my good friend,' you know," said friend Maria Medina. "She was very alive for age 92, God bless her. She was a very nice person."

Blair has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, and said he was framed by police. His lawyers say he never intended to kill anyone, and that he fired the shot in the air to break up a fight.

Jermaine said it was an ironic way for Mitchell to die.

"She loved young people and for her death to be caused at the hands of a young person would be heartbroken [sic] to her," said Jermaine. "It is a senseless death. It is a wake up call too, and we owe that to her so that this does not repeat again."

At the end of Mass, the priest told the congregation to speak Mitchell's name, to cherish her memory and to keep her name alive.

There will be a viewing for Mitchell at the McCall's Bronxwood Funeral Home at 4035 Bronxwood Avenue on Thursday.

Our Lady of Grace will hold a special prayer service for Mitchell on Monday night and her funeral Mass on Friday at 11 a.m.
