Beginning next weekend, all bottled water sold in New York State will have a five-cent deposit after a judge lifted an injunction Thursday.
The deposits were supposed to take effect in June, but the measure was delayed temporarily in order to allow bottlers more time to comply with the state's new bottle bill.
Critics say all beverages in plastic bottles should have to pay a deposit, not just water.
Governor David Paterson says 80 percent of the unclaimed water bottle deposits will go to the state.
In a statement, the governor praised the judge's decision saying, "The expansion of this legislation not only provides our State with much-needed revenue, but will also help us to keep our neighborhoods and parks clean."
The deposit officially goes into effect Saturday.
