Police arrested an 18-year-old man Thursday in connection with the shooting of an elderly woman who was hit by a bullet while sitting inside her home.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Bronx resident Jamal Blair admitted he fired the shot that killed Sadie Mitchell, 92, inside her home.

Investigators say two groups were fighting a turf battle outside Mitchell's home on East 224th Street in Williamsbridge Tuesday night when someone fired a shot from a 9 millimeter gun that pierced Mitchell's window and hit her in the back.

Mitchell managed to call a neighbor, who called 911. She later died at the hospital.

"When the group from the houses came together in a melee, he went, got a gun, fired one shot at the group then ran away, dropped the gun," said Kelly. "The gun has not been recovered. We believe that some people standing by may have picked up this weapon."

Blair has also been charged with criminal possession of a weapon.

Family members described Mitchell as feisty and very full of life. The shooting has left her daughter, neighbors, and local political leaders outraged.

"When I heard who the suspect was and that he was 18 years old, it only confirmed my feeling. He knows the difference between right and wrong. He made the wrong choice," said Mitchell's daughter. "The full extent of the law should come down on him -- no exceptions, no extenuating circumstances."

"Obviously we have idiots out there who continue to think they can exhibit their bravado by shooting at each other,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “In this case, it could have been anyone's grandmother. That's why people are so angry."

As he was leaving the 47th precinct Thursday night, Blair said he was framed.

"The police did it!" screamed Blair. "The police framed me man! Police framed me!"

Police, however, say they tracked him down by looking him up by his nickname in their database of criminals.

Meanwhile, residents living in the neighborhood where the shooting took place say they fear the one arrest won't do much to quell the larger problem of having too many illegal guns on the streets.

"Yes he's off the streets but he's one of how many," asked one Williamsbridge resident. "And he's one of how many that we have to worry about if it's going to happen in our home. So it's time to get the guns off the street."

A viewing for Mitchell is being held next Thursday at the McCall Funeral Home in the Bronx from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Her funeral mass will take place at Our Lady of Grace Cathedral next Friday at 11 a.m.
