Police are investigating the shooting death of an elderly Bronx woman, who was struck by a bullet Tuesday evening while sitting in her home.
Police say Sadie Mitchell, 92, was inside her home on East 224th Street in Williamsbridge when a bullet came through a first-floor window and hit her in the back.
Mitchell, seen above, phoned a neighbor who called 911 and was taken to Jacobi Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Police believe the shooting was not intentional.
"You had a choice to make, and you made your choice. She didn't have a choice," said Shahron van Rooij, Mitchell's daughter. "I hope you fry. I don't care how old you are, 18, 19, 30, 12. I hope you fry."
"Obviously we have idiots out there who continue to thank that they can exhibit their bravado by shooting at each other," said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. "In this case, this could have been anyone's grandmother, and that's why people are so angry. I want to curse, and I don't want to do that in the media, but this is an outrage."
Mitchell was remembered as a feisty, lively woman who went to the local senior center Tuesday for lunch and an exercise class.
Local residents say they are frightened by the case.
"It could have been any one of us. It could have been any one of us,” said one local resident. “She's living right there, my mom is living right there. It could've been her house, it could have been anybody.”
"To me, it's sad to know that she was in her house, she was not outside, and she lost her life like that, by some street shot,” said another.
Police have not made any arrests. Anyone with information on the case should contact the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS, or text CRIMES and then enter TIP577, or visit www.nypdcrimestoppers.com.
