A day after State Senator Hiram Monserrate was found guilty of a misdemeanor assault charge, at least five other state senators called for him to resign.

Democrat Liz Krueger of Manhattan, the first female lawmaker to call for a resignation, released a statement Friday saying Monserrate should step down for the sake of his constituents, the State Senate and the Democratic Party.

"I don't believe being an elected official is a right. It is an honor and a privilege," said Krueger. "I believe I should be held to higher standards because I am an elected official and I believe my colleagues in the legislature should also be held to a higher standard. And so for me, this is simple: Mr. Monserrate, it's time to resign."

Monserrate said through a spokesman that he has no plans to step aside.

On Thursday, Monserrate was found guilty of a misdemeanor assault charge, after he forcibly dragged his girlfriend, Karla Giraldo, out of their apartment the night she was cut across the face.

He was cleared of the more serious felony charges against him.

With his legal fees topping a half-million dollars, Monserrate has a defense fund set up by a network of backers.

Monserrate faces up to a year in prison when sentenced on December 4, but as a first-time offender could avoid jail altogether.

Also on Friday, the senator's attorney revealed that Monserrate and Giraldo plan to marry.
