Mayoral candidate William Thompson was endorsed Monday by New York Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand in his run for mayor. NY1's Bobby Cuza filed the following report.

It's a shot in the arm for Bill Thompson -- the endorsement of New York's two Senators, both fellow Democrats.

With just over a month until election day, Thompson is trying to build momentum for what he hopes will be an upset of the incumbent mayor. But whether it'll be enough to overcome Mike Bloomberg's lopsided advantage in resources and poll numbers remains to be seen.

"I think that New York has a tradition of underdogs. I think the interesting thing about this race is it's as close as it is right now," Schumer said.

While Schumer and Gillibrand were both generous with their praise for Thompson, they were also both careful not to directly criticize the mayor, whether on term limits or on his treatment of the middle class.

"I'm not going to say anything negative about Michael Bloomberg. I'm just talking positively about Bill Thompson. That's what I've always done," Schumer said.

While Thompson has tried to frame himself as a champion of the middle class, Bloomberg has outlined the race quite differently in a new TV commercial.

"New Yorkers have a choice. New Yorkers have someone who will stand up and fight for them," Thompson said.

While he didn't have any official campaign events Monday, Bloomberg did show off the progress of MillionTreesNYC, an initiative to plant one million new trees throughout the five boroughs within 10 years.

The mayor also picked up the endorsement of the powerful New York Hotel and Motel Trades Council, whose get-out-the-vote operation he hopes will put him over the top November 3.
