Plenty of poetry is on full display in Lower Manhattan, now that the Poets House has moved to Battery Park City.

The Poets House, a 50,000-volume poetry library and literary center that has been open since 1985, is opening the doors on its brand new $8.7 million facility by the waterfront.

The 11,000 square foot space is twice to size of the center's previous facility in a second-floor SoHo loft.

"There's something here for everyone to discover that belongs to them, which is what another human being has to say to you through artful language," said Poets House Executive Director Lee Briccetti.

Within in the collection are gems like a holiday card from T.S. Eliot, works by e.e. cummings, James Joyce, Dylan Thomas and Poets House co-founder and two-time United States Poet Laureate Stanley Kunitz.

"Poetry is in every culture, it is one of our oldest art forms, and we're really here to create an invitation for people to come and discover something in the art form that will enrich their lives," said Briccetti.

"Look at it and discover there is something in there for them that they couldn't get anywhere else," said Poets House Board President Emerita Margo Viscusi.

Like a lot of houses, Poets House has its own backyard with an amphitheater where there will be poetry readings and other performances.

"Poetry you can actually carry in your head, it doesn't require a place, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't have a place," said Billy Collins, another former United States poet laureate. "And it's great that there is this beautiful center for it and a very welcoming building."

Poets House offers more than 200 public programs each year, including panels, lectures, readings, writing workshops and walking tours in the city and across the country.

"It's an environment that honors that impulse, and there are also resources, classes and workshops to help you get better at your craft," said Bricetti.
