The New York City Police Department's hate crimes unit is investigating graffiti left on a building along Manhattan's East Village.

Investigators say an image bearing a swastika was found on a building on East 13th Street between avenues A and B.

The building's owner, Alan Rabunski, says he's upset his property was defaced. He also says his parents were Holocaust survivors, and the graffiti hits too close to home.

"This required ingenuity, preparation, planning and also intent. So this is pernicious, it's hateful and people ought to see it and be aware that this exists," Rabunski said.

Rabunski says he has to pay to have the image removed, saying the city's anti graffiti unit told him it isn't responsible for any tags above ground level.

NY1 has reached out to police to confirm the graffiti removal policy and are awaiting a response.
