Governor David Paterson claims supporters of his potential opponent urged the White House to get involved in the 2010 race.

While at an event in Syracuse Wednesday, the governor was asked if he thinks Attorney General Andrew Cuomo influenced recent presidential pressure to rethink his campaign.

"I don't know of any tangible roll he may have played," Paterson said. "A number of people connected to him certainly did that, and I think that is what confused some of the confidential conversations that were held, of which, I have never been, given authorization to discuss the confidential conversations."

After meeting face to face on Monday, the White House says President Obama did not ask the governor to abandon his election campaign.

Officials say they pointed out the difficulty of winning and the risks of bringing down fellow Democrats.
