The last night of New York City Fashion Week went out with a bang Thursday as designer Tommy Hilfiger debuted his spring collection and new Fifth Avenue store. NY1's George Whipple filed the following report.

The last night of the spring 2010 collections closed with Tommy Hilfiger's just-stepped-out-of-the-Long-Island-beach-club look.

"You're gonna see free and easy casual and dressy clothes for men and women, a nautical look, a California look, pastels a lot of white. But a mix of sportswear and dressier gowns, sophisticated dress," Hilfiger said.

Women and men walked the runway looking yaw in nautical looks that emphasized blue and white. The gents wore bowties and the ladies, well, looked like ladies.

With the city in recession this year, it has been a subdued fashion week. But Hilfiger charges straight ahead -- not only did he put on a grand show that closed Fashion Week, he opened a store on Fifth Avenue the very same night.

"If you look at the traffic on this street it is international traffic, it is vast, it is full of shoppers and we have looked for a store here for many, many years and we have found this location and it was the right time," Hilfiger said.

"He's managed to capture that casual chic thing more than anyone lese I think. And he's got that kind of laid back glamour I love, because I love to throw something on for it to kind of work and he doesn't make things too pretentious and in your face," said Actor Emily Blunt.

"I like the fact that his clothes are really well cut, they're very wearable. You can still feel like you can wear a piece of his clothing and go from one place to another in the day and then the evening too," said Actor Naomi Watts.
