The two leading candidates in the runoff races for public advocate and city comptroller stumped for votes in Harlem Saturday.

City Councilmen Bill de Blasio and John Liu made a joint appearance at the Reverend Al Sharpton's National Action Network headquarters.

Both candidates failed to achieve the 40 percent of the vote in Tuesday's Democratic primary, which is needed to avoid a runoff, so they will face their opponents again on September 29.

"It's time for this city demand jobs for its people, to demand affordable housing," said de Blasio. "It's time for our city government to listen to the people it serves. Go ask any public school parent, I'm a public school parent, we're not being listen to. And that's wrong - we can't make our schools better without involving our parents."

"I will be talking about the issues," said Liu. "I will be talking bout how we need to eliminate waste from the city and I'll be talking about the need to strength the pension plans so that we can protect the future of our workers and retirees and restore their confidence."

Programming Reminder: NY1's political anchor Dominic Carter will moderate LIVE one-hour debates in both races next week.

The debate for public advocate is Wednesday, September 23 at 7 p.m., while the city comptroller's debate is Thursday, September 24 at 7 pm.
