Isaac Mizrahi returned to Bryant Park this season, after a decade away. NY1's Stephanie Simon filed the following report from the Mizrahi and Dennis Basso shows. He's been doing a television "Fashion Show" on the Bravo network, and now Isaac Mizrahi's own fashion show is back at Bryant Park, returning to the tents after a decade away.
His dramatic runway came complete with rain showers and a stairway to fashion heaven.
"You know, any girl, any beautiful model can look pretty at the end of the runway if she stands," he said. "But let's see her when she is walking up stairs, do you know what I mean? I think that makes her look even more beautiful."
Mizrahi's own star power attracts a who's who of A and "D" list celebrities.
"This is a very 'A list' moment," said comedian Kathy Griffin. "What I did was run into Nicole Kidman, and Rene Zellweger, and Scarlett Johansson in the parking lot, and I beat them all up and then I took their seat."
"Isaac is one of the most colorful and entertaining personalities that we have on the New York fashion scene," said Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour.
And all we can say to Mizrahi's looks for spring is, bravo.
From Isaac Mizrahi, NY1 headed to Dennis Basso, where fashion is a "cinch."
"We always like to accent the waist," said Basso. "And a lot of these dresses require that, and we created a teeny belt that just makes it right."
Basso's bringing pretty back. The furrier turned fashion designer keeps women on their tip toes, with a ballerina look inspired by French impressionist painter Edward Degas.
"A tribute to the great Degas and the ballerinas, and we've taken that and we've developed it from a short tutu-looking cocktail dress to knee length, to floor length," he explained.
Basso's "lasso-ed" waist and muted palette attracted stars like Mary Louis Parker, who couldn't wait for "showtime."
"I'm a new fan," she said. "He sent me pictures of his clothes and I thought they were really elegant and pretty."
TV personality Joan Rivers said she was busy shopping for the Oscars.
"I thought it was fabulous," she said. "I thought it was very young. I thought it was very current. I loved the liquidity of the dresses and I loved the palette. I thought the colors, the soft, muted colors were just beautiful."
Overall it was a soft, dreamy colorscape with floral patterns worthy of a Monet painting. Basso's ballerina look is for women who want to make a very good "impression."
