The city celebrated 75 years of trees in Bryant Park with a special gathering Wednesday.

The party featured music, and a tree cake to toast the 70 foot London Plane trees that were planted in 1934 by Robert Moses.

Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe says the event was held in hopes of encouraging New Yorkers to take care of its trees.

"It's nice to take time out in a sort of tongue and cheek way to celebrate the birthday of the trees in Bryant Park -- cut a little cake hear some music, sing happy birthday and just, you know, in a serious way, focus people on the idea that tress are really important and it's worth investing city money and tax dollars," Benepe said.

There about 220 trees in Bryant Park.
