A female cat, seen above, was rescued today from a Brooklyn sewer.
An East New York store owner nearby heard the calico making noises from a sewer and called Animal Care and Control.
Animal Care workers and emergency services opened the drain to free the cat, which is believed to be five or six months old.
They do not know how she got into the sewer or how long she was stuck there.
"The cat was a mess. It was scared, it was thin," said store owner Butch Thompson. "It looked like it hadn't eaten for half a day, a day. It was very scared, dirty. The cat was going crazy. It was just happy to be out, I guess."
"We did a physical exam and the cat was okay, except that she was so weak because she had not been eating," said Animal Care and Control head technician Ademola Nafiu. "So we got her food. She was eating like no man's land."
Animal rescue workers named the cat Cheese and say she will be up for adoption in three days. For more information, call 1-212-788-4000.
