Bright colors, metallics and bold prints -- a wide variety of designs thanks to a trio of designers who teamed up to deliver their collections on the runway at Bryant Park. NY1's Samantha Liebman filed the following report. For a second season, designers Nicholas K and Mara Hoffman pooled their resources to put on their shows this fall. But this time, they were joined by reality TV star Whitney Port as she debuted her own collection, Whitney Eve.
"It was really so hectic. I really thank God that I have some experience having worked for peoples rev and Diane von Furstenberg and everything," Port said. "We worked backstage before, so I kind of knew what went into it. Of course having your own line you don't really realize all the little details and knick knacks you have to pay attention to."
While the idea of the group show may be fairly new, the designers' inspirations go back to a different places in time and in one case, a different world.
"It's kind of ethereal and dreamy and bright and ethnic and wild. It's, I don't know, what I imagine a dream journeyer would wear as they travel through dreams, Hoffman said.
Those "dreamers" would be wearing Hoffman's bold colors, with Native American inspired patterns and dresses to suit any hemline or waistline -- perfect for a day at the beach or a party at night.
Meanwhile, Nicholas K looked to inspiration from 20th century art.
"I called it Rockabilly painter. It's taken from abstract expressionism and a little bit of Bauhaus -- the cubic forms and shapes," Nicholas K said.
There were paint-splatter prints, pastel plaids and lots of oversized rain hats and jackets, all ready for the street or the countryside. The collection was very different than Whitney Port's all-glam collection that she says is perfect for a cocktail party.
"It's real fun and feminine mixing LA and New York style," Port said.
From Port's many formfitting frilly dresses with sparkly sequins and touches of lace to the more sporty, comfortable shorts, blouses and windbreakers of Nicholas K to the dreamy, generously draped fabrics of Mara Hoffman, the show had every time of day and any occasion covered.
