The number of documented deaths among World Trade Center rescue workers has reportedly soared since last year.

A representative from the New York State Department of Health told the New York Post Sunday that 817 workers have died since the attacks, up from 664 deaths last September.

State researchers report at least 270 deaths were due to cancer, and more than 200 from other illnesses.

The article also says about 150 workers suffered traumatic deaths – such as in the line of duty, drug overdoses, assaults or suicides.

Officials tell the Post the rise is mainly due to city agencies and WTC medical programs sharing more records and say they're continuing to collect cases, meaning that number could rise.

NY1 has reached out to the state Department of Health for comment.

Friday marks eight years since the terrorist attack. NY1 will have full live coverage of the memorial ceremony.

Family members and survivors will gather at a park across the street from the World Trade Center site. Moments of silence will be observed four times during the service; two times for when the planes struck the towers and two more times marking when each tower fell.

Family members will be paired with volunteers from the five boroughs to read the victims' names.
Volunteers were chosen to highlight the fact that September 11th was officially designated the "National Day of Service and Remembrance" this year.

NY1's coverage begins at 8:30 Friday morning. It will include the name reading in its entirety and reports from other memorial events throughout the city.
