More of the city's elementary and middle schools are making the grade.
According to the Department of Education, 84 percent of public schools serving grades K through 8 received an "A" on their annual progress reports.
The grade encompasses academic achievement along with parent, teacher and student surveys.
It's a huge jump from last year when only 38 percent of schools earned a top grade. Officials at Manhattan's PS 189 say while they are pleased, there is still more work to be done.
"This school, even though it's up considerably, I'd like to see many more kids meeting standards and many more kids exceeding standards," said Schools Chancellor Joel Klein.
"I want to keep continuing what we've been changing from last year. A lot of teamwork a lot of professional development that's targeted what the teachers want to improve on and continuing this look at data," said PS 189 teacher Jessica Grabiner.
Thirteen percent of schools received a "B", two percent got a "C", and one percent earned a "D" or an "F."
Next year, the DOE says the standards to receive top grades will be even higher.
