Drivers seem to be responding favorably to new legislation signed by Governor David Paterson Thursday that bans text messaging, checking e-mail or surfing the web while behind the wheel.

Ban On Texting While Driving

The law also covers the use of laptops or other handheld devices while operating a moving vehicle.

Drivers can be fined up to $150, but only if they're pulled over for another driving violation.

The new law takes effect November 1.

It is already illegal for drivers to talk on a cell phone while driving unless they are using a hands-free device.

Those who spoke to NY1 Friday said they thought the extension of the ban is a good idea.

"I'm all for it, because you can cause an accident if you take your eyes of the road," said one driver.

"I've seen it all the time. Somebody's going get hurt. It's dangerous," said another. "I mean, keep your eyes on the road."

A recent Virginia Tech study found that texting while driving makes drivers 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash.
