The state department of education has classified 10 city schools as "persistently dangerous" in their annual list.

That's an improvement from last year, when 16 city schools were in that category.

The state department of education added eight middle and elementary schools schools to the list, two were held over from the last year and six were taken off because of improved safety.

The state categorizes schools as persistently dangerous if they have two consecutive years of a high number of criminal incidents like robbery, weapons possession, assault or sexual offenses.

Schools on the list must provide transfer options to students if available, and they receive state support to improve safety.
