A new report from the New York State Department of Education shows citywide SAT scores have taken a small dip, while other achievement tests have gone up.

According to the report, the mean score for Math on the SAT is down two points to 459 out of 800.

The score for critical reading also dropped four points to 435.

City school officials say the drop is misleading, in part due to a change in demographics. They say the number of black students who took the test rose 2.4 percent, while the number of Hispanic test takers increased 7.2 percent.

Education officials say it's a sign that more students from these two groups are aspiring to go to college.

The news was better for scores on Advanced Placement exams where the number of students scoring a three or higher on the tests rose 6.5 percent.

Performance improved for all ethnic groups.
