School Bus Driver Dies En Route

By: NY1 News

A bus driver died Tuesday while driving several young passengers home from a day camp in Queens.

Police sources tell NY1 that Ramon Fernandez, 47, was driving northbound in Elmhurst when he probably suffered a heart attack at a red light.

Sources say Rachel Guzy, 16, tried to apply the brake but was unsuccessful.

The bus had no air conditioning, and a police officer saw Fernandez driving with the front door open.

The officer then saw the body of Fernandez tumble out of the door. He was brought to a hospital and declared dead.

Police said had Fernandez survived, he would have been issued a summons for unsafe operations for driving with an open front door.

The Magic Carpet Day Camp in Bayside, Queens told NY1 that none of the children aboard the bus were injured and that the incident is still being investigated.
