Firefighters lined Fifth Avenue Friday to bid farewell to a hero.

A funeral was held for September 11th rescue worker and fireman John McNamara at Saint Patrick's Cathedral.

McNamara, 44, died earlier this week after a battle with colon cancer.

A friend and fellow firefighter says McNamara spent more than 500 hours at the World Trade Center site.

"I worked with John McNamara for nine years and he's an outstanding individual," said friend and fellow fireman Michael Lee. "Truly generous, a wonderful person and he's going to be missed by many and he's going to be remembered by all."

McNamara is survived by a wife and a two-year-old son.

Last week, Mount Sinai School of Medicine released a study showing that an unusually high number of September 11th recovery workers have developed multiple myeloma, a rare form of blood cancer that typically affects people age 60 and older.

Researchers say they have seen a higher percentage of cases among those who responded to the World Trade Center.

While rescue workers were exposed to a wide range of toxic chemicals and carcinogens, researchers say it is too soon to know whether the exposures caused the cancer.
