Some local elected officials are renewing the call to reverse a policy on the Staten Island Ferry that's been in effect since the September 11th attacks.
In a letter recently sent to Homeland Security officials, Congressman Michael McMahon called on the federal government to allow city transportation officials to restore car service on the boats.
The proposal is already getting support from some ferry riders and Borough President James Molinaro, who cosigned the letter.
"When the service was discontinued in the '90s, there were over 1,000 cars a day that were using it," Molinaro said. "So, just multiply that by 365, that's close to half a million cars a year that would be off the road."
"I think I would feel safe, and I think as a Staten Islander, we don't have much access, or anything, you have to take bridges and pay huge tolls so I definitely would be agreeing with the Congressman," said one ferry rider.
While the Department of Homeland Security declined an interview, the Department of Transportation says both agencies are already discussing the recommendations.
