City officials Tuesday announced the creation of a shared commercial kitchen in East Harlem which will allow dozens of small businesses to build a name from scratch.
Officials say the 4,000 square foot facility at La Marqueta in East Harlem will allow 60 small businesses a year to get started.
The announcement was made at Amy's Bread in Chelsea, where City Council Speaker Christine Quinn says the initiative will save entrepreneurs money and create jobs.
"How many people do you know who are great bakers, great cooks, great chefs, why don't they run an Amy's Bread of their own?" Quinn said. "Because they don't have the dough to build a kitchen, they can't do it in their apartment it's not allowed."
"The heart of New York, the flavor of New York is literally great small businesses on the street," said Amy Scherber of Amy's Bread. "Many of them can't make it any longer and now you see bigger chains coming in so now it's really wonderful to have that possibility and to have it continue and I'm really happy."
