Family and friends of the late actor/writer/director Adrienne Shelly, along with members of the Greenwich Village community, gathered today in Abingdon Square Park to dedicate a park named in her honor.

The memorial is across the street from Shelly's office, where she was killed by a construction worker in 2006.

Shelly's husband says it took nearly two years and help from a handful of organizations to get the garden going. Family and friends say it's a fitting way to remember her.

"She was herself a flower. She was someone who brought joy to a lot of people," said her husband Andy Ostroy. "She was one the nicest, most friendly people you could meet. So I think it was a very fitting honor for her."

"I know she spend a lot of time in this area and in this park," said Shelly's brother, Jeffrey Levine. "And for there to be a legacy like this, it's very appropriate. She did her writing in the building and in this park."

"She really was such a fixture in this neighborhood for so many years that it's impossible not to think of her whenever I'm here," said actor Paul Rudd, a friend of Shelly's.

Shelly's last project was "Waitress," which she wrote, directed, and co-starred in. She was killed before the film's premiere.

Her husband now runs the Adrienne Shelly Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting female filmmakers.
