New Yorkers are now paying a little extra at the cash register.

The city sales tax hike went into effect Saturday, bumping the burden up half a percentage point, to 8.875 percent.

That amounts to an extra 50 cents tax on every $100 purchase.

It's the first permanent raise in the tax in more than 35 years.

The mayor and the City Council introduced the plan earlier this year to battle the city's financial woes.

Lawmakers are hoping to raise $950 million a year in additional revenue from the measure.
