Manhattan's Wall Street subway station reopened Thursday afternoon, a couple of hours after a live wire stalled a 5 subway train and forced the evacuation of all passengers and commuters on the platform.
Around 9:40 a.m., a subway car ran over an exposed communications cable. The cable then hit the third rail and created a smoke condition and loud popping noises, according Fire Department Chief Kevin Woods.
Scared morning commuters ran from the station, FDNY and transit officials say there was no explosion or fire.
Only one minor injury was reported and the person was given medical treatment.
"The fire department evacuated two trains that were in the station and also the subway platform....," said Woods. "At this time, this incident is under control and we turned over all operations to the Transit Authority."
The 4/5 subway service between the Brooklyn Bridge station in Manhattan and the Nevins Street station in Brooklyn was temporarily suspended, but was restored within two hours.
