Manhattan lawmakers and community leaders presented the FBI with racist letters sent to Hispanic business owners.
Over the past year, restaurant owners in Washington Heights and Inwood say they've received a barrage of hate mail, all containing threats such as "Stop wrecking my USA," "Speak english" and "We don't want you in our community."
Advocates say it's the letter writer who is out of place in the community.
"We're not going to have our rights taken away because people from downtown who can't afford their rents now want to come to our community and tell us what we need to do and send hate letters like this," said Fernando Mateo of Hispanics Across America. "You know what? We are not going to back away, we are not going to chicken out."
The targeted business owners say they have called for police protection. The FBI tells NY1 it takes these threats seriously and is investigating.
