A bill requiring commercial buildings to allow workers to bring their bikes into the office passed the City Council Wednesday by a vote of 46-1.

The bill requires commercial buildings to allow workers to bring their bikes into the office if the building is equipped with a freight elevator.

Building owners can request an exemption to the law, if they can prove safety concerns or they can provide free secure bicycle parking within three blocks of the building.

Supporters say the legislation will reduce carbon emissions and improve public health.
