The State Board of Regents Monday named Dr. David Steiner as the state's new education commissioner.
He is currently the Dean of the Hunter College School of Education in Manhattan.
Dr. Steiner is best known for his effort to improve teacher quality and preparation.
"We have to train them, retain them, support them and develop them, this is not a simple one shot deal," Steiner said. And we have to make sure that they can intervene quickly and effectively, based on perceptions of what matters, to keep students on track in their learning."
Governor David Paterson is among those praising the election, calling Steiner a visionary education reformer whose experience makes him a natural choice to lead New York's education system.
Steiner succeeds Richard Mills.
He will assume his new role in October.
