Brooklyn Assemblyman Dov Hikind said Friday that he was appalled that several rabbis were arrested Thursday in connection with an international money laundering ring.
But, he also cautioned that all the facts are not in yet.
The investigation began as a probe into the sale of black market kidneys and fake Gucci handbags. It eventually turned into a sweeping probe of political corruption that ended in the arrests of 44 people, including several politicians in New Jersey and the rabbis.
Among those arrested was Rabbi Saul Kassin of the Shaare Zion synagogue in Borough Park, Brooklyn. The 87-year-old, seen above, is charged with money laundering for allegedly funneling money through charities he ran.
Another Brooklyn man, Levy Izhak Rosenbaum, is charged with conspiring to arrange the sale of an Israeli citizen's kidney for $160,000 to a fictitious uncle of an undercover FBI agent working with the FBI's informant, indicted real estate developer Solomon Dwek.
Hikind said New Yorkers should not rush to judgment, but the arrests have stunned the community.
"It's beyond comprehension. I know him from the community, Rabbi Kassin, who's 87 years old," said Hikind. "I mean, I know that everybody always says when someone is arrested, you know, for whatever, for all kinds of things, 'it can't be; it's impossible.' But, you know, this particular one, I got to say is sort of almost beyond comprehension."
Authorities said Dwek then helped to bust several New Jersey politicians.
Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano, Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell, and Ridgefield Mayor Anthony Suarez are all charged with taking bribes in exchange for help with getting approvals for real estate deals. A number of other New Jersey officials are also charged.
