A science research center will make its home in the city's new state-of-the-art commercial bioscience complex on the East River.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, joined by City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and other officials, announced the first tenant in the Alexandria Center for Science and Technology at the East River Science Park.

ImClone, a global biopharmaceutical company, will bring 125 scientists to the location with plans to expand.

Bloomberg says there are a lot of benefits to expanding the city's bioscience industry.

"We now have a world recognized and globally respected company anchoring our new science park and that will help us attract other research and development companies here," Bloomberg said. "Above all, this agreement amounts to a giant vote of confidence in the future of our city."

The park's first tower is expected to be completed by next summer.

The entire complex is expected to hold more than a million square feet of research and development space and create more than 2,000 jobs.
