The Senate Judiciary Committee has delayed the vote on the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court until next week.

Committee members quickly gaveled in and out Tuesday morning, with Chairman Patrick Leahy, a Democrat, announcing they would reconvene next Tuesday, when they could vote on Sotomayor.

GOP members of the committee wanted the vote put off so they could have more time for debate.

However, all signs from leading Republicans on the committee are that subsequent Senate debates should not take more than four or five days, a standard timetable for Supreme Court nominees.

Democrats are expected to have more than enough votes to eventually confirm Sotomayor when the full Senate votes, which could come as soon as next month.
