ayor Michael Bloomberg endorsed a political newcomer with a familiar name Friday in one Queens City Council race.

Paul Vallone is the son of former Council Speaker Peter Vallone Senior and the brother of Council member Peter Vallone, Jr. He's also a former member of the City Board of Correction.

The mayor says that background is one of the main reasons he supports Vallone.

"Paul's brother, Peter, has been one of our strongest allies in the City Council, especially on public safety," Bloomberg said. "And I know fighting crime is just as important to Paul as it is to Peter."

"When the mayor comes right here to our neighborhood and makes that type of commitment, first to our campaign, into our district, and to the rest of the city, it says the mayor cares about Queens," said Vallone. "The mayor cares about our homes. And that is a very strong part of what my campaign has been about.

Vallone is running for the 19th District seat held by Tony Avella, who is running for mayor.

It's a crowded field with at least seven other candidates vying for the position.
