High Line's Opening Celebrated With Street Fest

New Yorkers celebrated the recent opening of the city's new elevated park Sunday with a street festival.
The High Line Street Festival featured the world's largest lemonade stand, live music performances, face painting and other free activities geared toward families.
Organizers say they wanted the whole community to get involved.
"It's kids and family centered. And to me that is the great thing about the High Line is seeing kids up there," said Friends of the High Line Co-founder Robert Hammond. "People say we should have built a playground up there, but to me it's one big playground. They run up the benches, they play in the 10th Avenue overlook, and it's all safe because they're away from cars."
"Having the High Line open has just been a great addition to the West Side," said City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. "It is crowded every day. And it's so exciting to see people enjoying it."
The first section of the High Line, which opened last month, runs a half mile from Gansevoort Street to 18th Street.
The park will eventually extend up to 34th Street.
