The city is asking for the public's help to bring some comfort to the soldiers fighting overseas.

Care packages are being assembled for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. The city is putting several hundred bins in locations around the five boroughs, including firehouses, police precincts and at the Staten Island Ferry.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg urged New Yorkers to find the time to donate anything that will help the troops feel more at home.

"Instant coffee and tea and soap, and deodorant, movie DVDs, audio books, those kinds of things," suggested Bloomberg. "You know, our military does get the things that hopefully that they need to fight the war, but if you can make their lives easier, and also I think it says that we care."

The collection runs from July 13th through August 21st.
