The White House says if studies go as planned, shots to prevent H1N1 will be given out as early as October.
Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius says while the Obama administration has not made any final decisions, priority will be given to those at risk, like young children, pregnant women and health care providers. She says studies for the vaccine will begin in August.
"We're moving towards the likelihood of a specific vaccine for H1N1," she said. "We're testing the virus strains now, preparing for the production lines, beginning clinical trials. What we need to do is make sure we have a safe vaccine. We know the right dose, we know the targeted population."
The H1N1/swine flu outbreak began in April and claimed as many as 38 lives in the city.
