Mayor Michael Bloomberg joined other city officials Monday to break ground on Brooklyn's 28-acre Bushwick Inlet Park.

The first phase will include the construction of a multipurpose synthetic turf field and is expected to be completed in the winter of 2010.

The $30 million park is located on the site of a former rental car storage lot and was designed after the 2005 waterfront rezoning of two Brooklyn neighborhoods.

"This park will provide the people of Williamsburg and Greenpoint with great new open spaces along the East River," Bloomberg said. "It will be the latest but not the last park we bring to this part of Brooklyn and the latest but not last waterfront park we bring to the New York City."

Construction of the second phase will begin early next year and will focus on building a playground and a new sustainable building with community space.
